Once weekly fluconazole (300mg Fluconazole) in the treatment onychomycosis

Abstract
Introduction: Onychomycosis is the most common superficial disease. Fluconazole in both open and double blind studies is proved to be effective and safe. Aim: The present study aimed at establishing the efficacy of the pulse fluconazole (300 mg once-weekly) for 6 months in cases of hand nails infections and 12 months in cases of feet nail actions. Material and methods: The study comprised 43 patients with feet onychomycosis and 2 patients with hand onychomycosis (patient’s age ranging from 18 to 70 years). More than 20% of the nail bed was affected inall cases. Diagnosis was based on direct microscopy and by culturing. Results: Up to this moment 22 patients finished treatment. The clinical cured rate was 95% in this group. Mycological and clinical cured was observed of 77% patients. Conclusions: 1. Fluconazole in pulse therapy (300 mg once weekly) is effective in the treatment of onychomycosis. 2. Fluconazole in long therapy is a safe and good tolerated drug.
