OPPORTUNITIES Vs CHALLENGES: AN INSIGHT INTO STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF RESEARCH FORTUITY AND DIFFICULTIES

Abstract
Background and objectives: Research is the systematic investigation and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. When such an important and complicated search is done at the student level, it not only needs appreciation when they succeed, but also needs upgrading of the present conditions thus providing them a better platform to move forward in the same. Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess the opportunities and challenges faced by the postgraduate dental students of Tamil Nadu.Methods: This was a crosssectional questionnaire study. An in-depth questionnaire with a set of 25 questions was distributed to 203 postgraduates in 5 dental colleges and data was collected and analyzed.Results: Out of the 203 questionnaires delivered, 83% of the respondents accepted that they had enough fortuities than difficulties during their research and 87% of the respondents felt that an in depth research training included in the curriculum will help them improve the knowledge on research and scientific article writing.Conclusions: The present study shows that more focus should be laid onto training into research than the present scenario.
