Optimization of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from meat processing wastewaters using microalgal biofilms
Journal Title: UNKNOWN - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: The conventional activated sludge processes are not able to completely treat the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds of meat processing wastewaters. Microalgal biofilm, which has the advantages of easiness and inexpensiveness, can be applied as a post-treatment method. Methods: The optimal levels of micronutrients and N/P ratio were aimed in the cultivation of Scenedesmus quadricauda as a biofilm formed on the two types of commercially available bed packing. For this purpose, the Factorial design was run to maximize the removal of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate concentration in the synthetic meat processing wastewater. Results: Experimental data showed better results for the removal of biofilm formed on the sponge filter. In addition, a maximum removal efficiency of 55.6%, 47% and 48.% was respectively achieved for ammonium, nitrate and phosphate at optimal N/P ratio of 10.5 and volumetric percentage of 50% of micronutrients. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that microalgal biofilm of Scenedesmus is able to remove the nutritional components of meat processing wastewaters. The process is needed to be optimized for theeffective treatment.
Behavioral responses of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by sublethal exposure to chlorpyrifos: a case study in Twin Lakes of West Sumatra
Background: The most commonly used insecticide by 99.8% farmers in West Sumatra, is chlorpyrifos which contains organophosphates. Chlorpyrifos is used to kill insects and other pests and works as the contact poison, gast...
Assessment of scale formation and corrosion of drinking water supplies in Ilam city (Iran)
Background: Scaling and corrosion are the two most important indexes in water quality evaluation. Pollutants are released in water due to corrosion of pipelines. The aim of this study is to assess the scale formation and...
Mitoxantrone removal by electrochemical method: A comparison of homogenous and heterogenous catalytic reactions
Background: Mitoxantrone (MXT) is a drug for cancer therapy and a hazardous pharmaceutical to the environment which must be removed from contaminated waste streams. In this work, the removal of MXT by the electro-Fenton...
Kinetic study of the regeneration of spent caustic via the genetic algorithm method
Background: Spent caustic contains noxious components such as sulfide species and also high chemical oxygen demand content (COD). Oxidation of these materials to caustic and sulfate species is mostly the rate-controlling...
The status of wastewater management in Shokuhieh industrial park (A case study of Qom province)
Background: Water resource management is a strategic issue in Qom city. Water scarcity is one of the most critical concerns of industrial estates. This study aimed to evaluate wastewater management in the Shokuhieh indus...
