OPTIMIZATION OF THE ADDITIVES CONTENT IN MODEL LUBRICANTS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 225, Issue 3

Abstract

The paper discusses the research on the influence of selected commercial lubricating additives on the ability of the lubricant based on SAE 30/95 to prevent scuffing. The research was done using the T-02 four-ball apparatus, which allows a proportional increase of the load of the friction pair. The comparison of the investigated additives was based on the value of scuffing load (Pt), limiting pressure of seizure (poz) and on changes of the moment and coefficient of friction as a function of the load. The values of the examined parameters depend on the type and quantity of additives in the lubricating composition. In many cases, no monotonic dependence of the parameters on the content of additive was observed, and maxima for different additives and investigated features are present at different concentrations of the additives in the lubricating composition. No monotonicity and varying dependence of the investigated features for different additives and their concentration prevents aprioric optimisation of the lubricating oil composition. It has also been concluded that lubricating compositions of comparative values of Pt can show significant differences in poz values and vice versa. This shows that the maximal value of scuffing load should not be the only criterion for optimising the content of the additive in lubricant. These facts should be considered during composing the lubricants for specified friction pairs and friction conditions.
