Oral hygiene in cleft-palate-children treated with different orthodontic appliancess

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Treatment of clefted patients is long lasting process whichdemands restrictive obeying of oral hygiene rules. AIM:The aim of presented study was to estimate whether theoral hygiene level in patients with total palatal cleft dependson applied orthodontic approach. METHOD: Regardingtype of appliance - fixed or removable one, 147examined patients were divided into two groups: A and Brespectively, where the Plaque Index (PlI) and the GingivalIndex (GI) were assesed. Following limits for values ofboth indices (PlI and GI) were established: section I - lowvalues (not extentig 1), section II - medium values (higherthan 1, but not extending 2) and section III - high values(extending 2). For statistical purposes chi-square and HKruskal-Wallis tests were used. RESULTS: Results of gingivalcondition assessment were similar in both examinedgroups - no value higher than 1 was obtained. In terms ofplaque accumulation, both groups turned out to be statisticallysignificantly differentiated (p<0,05). Although patientstreated by fixed appliances removed dental plaquemore carefully in comparison with patients treated by removabledevices, the obtained results were unsatisfying -PlI values > 1 appeared in both groups. CONCLUSIONS:It inclined us to drawing the conclusion children with cleftpalate should be individually trained for the oral hygieneregime respecting, regardless chosen mode of appliance -either fixed or removable one.
