Oral implantology in Poland, yesterday and today

Abstract
Oral implantology began to develop in Poland in the middle of 20th century. The first results were not very optimistic. The survival of implants ranged from a few days to two years. Until the titanium era, a three-year implant survival in the oral cavity was regarded as a success of implantological treatment. Although Poland had made progress in modern oral implantology by the end of 20th century we were still about two decades behind that observed in more developed countries. Due to appropriate organisational and educational activities, first in academic settings and later in private practice, oral implantogy has begun to level up. The decision to merge three local organisations into one under the name of Polish Association of Oral Implantology was of great importance to our society. In 1998 the first in Poland Interdisciplinary Centre for Oral Implantology was established. Its major task was to introduce oral implantology into the curriculum of the under– and postgraduate dental education.The journal Protetyka Stomatologicza has played a great role in the development of oral implantology in Poland. The first paper devoted to this issue was published in 1975, and since then the journal has been involved in the promotion of this branch of knowledge. The specialist journal Implantoprotetyka, established in 2000, was another great achievement. Unfortunately, its publication stopped in 2012.
