Abstract
The domestication of space – the Lower Silesia example The paper’s objective is to present the ways of perceiving and valorising the space in the light of selected stories taken from the inhabitants of the Głuszyca commune. The text is based on the fi eldwork conducted in the years 2005–2010, which allowed to collect a number of representations of the nearest neighbourhood, as well as accounts of historical events, both from the distant past (such as the beginnings of the village) and from relatively modern days (World War II). Many of such facts have been mythologised since memory tends to adjust the past to the present instead of preserving its original shape.Therefore, it becomes especially interesting to find out which of them have found their place in the respondents’ remembrances and which were used to familiarise the space and give it a symbolic dimension. Space can only exist as a cultural phenomenon when an individual can experience it and when it becomes an important part of his/her life.
