Abstract
Memories of school, the first school years, classmates, teachers, personal achievements and failures constitute an essential part of many people’s identity, which is often still vividly remembered after many years. The recalled memories make it possible to assess things that were vital and valuable in the past, including school times. Since school memories are related not only to the bygone times, but also to a specifi c place, it can be assumed that they do not only refer to the topography of the place, but also encompass all material and non-material traces maintained and preserved in the collective memory. The objective of this paper is to present the memories that the former students have of their schools in Kremenets and Khyriv as well as the way they passed on these memories to the next generations, including the contemporary one. Many students recounted their recollections of the time spent at school in memoirs and autobiographies. Therefore, it seems worthwhile to consider why they wanted to capture their school memories and save them and the school itself from oblivion. On the basis of the preserved memoirs, an attempt to recreate these recollections was made. Since the authors of the memoirs decided to bring back their memories, they must have considered the time spent at school as valuable. It is their recollections that made it possible to stop the hands of time and to revive the past of the place that was special not only for the memoirs’ authors, but also for the whole generations of former students from schools in Kremenets and Khyriv. Recalling the memories of the places that played a signifi cant role for the history of Polish education should not be neglected as they are a testimony of those times, places and people and, most of all, a testimony of the success achieved in the fi eld of Polish education.
