"Pamietaj, abyś dzień święty święcił", czyli gry i zabawki religijne w zyciu dzieci dawniej i współczesnie

Abstract

Religious toys (also known as devotional and „Sunday” toys in English literature) are now inspiring great curiosity. Since miniature monstrances or tin chalices are no longer available in stores, they are all the more fascinating. Playing with small altars and dolls dressed as nuns and clergy was something natural and obvious, approved by adults, who hoped that by pretending to celebrate mass boys would be encouraged to join the priesthood or a vocation. The only concern was not to be idolatrous. Today, the production of religious toys has almost ceased. Those that are available today (e.g. Noah’s Ark) are produced not only for younger children, but also for other functions. They are used primarily for entertainment purposes. Some toys become tools used for artistic activities and/or „religious fighters”. However, it is not uncommon that objects touching on the sacred can arouse controversy.
