PARENTAL WORKSHOPS IN SCHOOLS – HANDY TIPS ON DESIGNING, RUNNING AND EVALUATING A WORKSHOP

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 46, Issue 4

Abstract

Abstract: The article aims to answer the question what arguments there are for the use of parental workshops in the work of the school psychologist. In my opinion, the usefulness of workshops for parents depends on the manner they are prepared, the accuracy they are run with and the possibility to evaluate their effectiveness. The basic recommendation discussed in the article concerns the need to use sound psychological knowledge - including the latest empirical reports and recognized theories - while formulating the content of a workshop. At the preparatory stage, the principle of taking care to signal this content by using an interesting title that does not make any exaggerated promises at the same time seems valuable. I would also point to the development of many materials and techniques as an essential element of thorough workshop preparation even if only some of them will be actually used in the workshop. Of course, whether a workshop is effective or not does not only depend on its good preparation in terms of its content but also on attention to organization issues such as choosing a convenient date, venue, a good way of distributing invitations for participants, etc. Also, taking into consideration the dynamics of group processes while doing the workshop seems essential. The necessity of workshop evaluation is the last principle I would call for. It consists in checking how the workshop was received and if it came up to the participants’ expectations. It is also necessary to analyze the extent to which the workshop was effective in reaching its objectives. In order to illustrate the importance of these specific tips, I refer to examples of parental workshops in the article, including one example taken from my own practice.
