Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 4
Abstract
introduction. Aging is an irreversible process – a stage of our life. However, aging is determined by a range of different factors affecting the body throughout its lifetime. The demographic aging of our community has created the demand to introduce new geriatric programmes and new methods in order to mobilize our seniors. One of the most important conditions of good health is performing physical activities regularly and each day. objective of the study. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of physical activity on the quality of life of seniors over 80-years-old. material and methods. The research tool was the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), brief version adapted for seniors. The level of physical activity was based on a detailed analysis of the results obtained in three areas of physical activity. The author also conducted own survey consisting of five questions related to the respondents’ standard of life. The study involved 198 respondents over 80-years-old, 105 women and 93 men. results and conclusions. Statistical analysis involved performing descriptive statistics. High average values of weekly energy consumption MET were obtained on the basis of the study. Most of the respondents were qualified as a group of moderate physical activity (MET 1800–2300). In order to assess the influence of physical activity on the quality of life, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used. The calculated correlation coefficients proved a strong relation between the characteristics studied. Physical activity and ability to perform many varied tasks plays a crucial role in the assessment of the quality of life.
