PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL OF ADOLESCENT FROM SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ŁÓDŹ

Abstract
[b]Background.[/b] The aim of this paper is to assess the level of physical activity declared by teenagers from public post-primary schools and to point out the sociodemographic factors which determine it.[b]Material and methods. [/b]There were examined 246 students, aged 13-19, from randomly chosen schools. There was used a survey including specifically designed questionnaire. In the statistical analysis there was applied independency test Chi with Yates' correction (p<0,05) and to determine the correlation there was C-Pearson index used.[b]Results.[/b] Merely 20% of participants were not exercising for minimum 30 minutes at all. Most of them were female participants. Among the others, over half of them were categorized as active, every third student was not active enough and almost every tenth of them was categorized as an inactive person. The guidelines concerning the minimal level of physical activity were definitely more frequently accomplished by the respondents aged between 13 and 16. Almost 2/3 of the participants regarded themselves as physically active people. However, male participants definitely more often described [b]their level of activity as very high and female participants as high enough.Conclusions.[/b] The level of physical activity of teenagers from post-primary schools in Lodz is too low. Moreover, most of the respondents' declared frequency of exercising is below the recommended minimal dose. It occurred that among the sociodemographic characteristics which influence physical activity level are sex and age. There was no significant correlation between physical activity level and educational background of parents or net income per person within a household. The body built was not a substantial determiner as well.
