PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HYPOXIA IN MAŁE FIELD HOCKEY PLAYERS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
Background. The goal ofthe paper was to estimate the influence of physical fitness level on hy-poxia grade in małe field hockey players. Materiał and methods. Twenty eight małe field hockey players (mean±values: age 23.6± 5.77 years, body mass 71.4+6.46 kg, height 176.72+5.51 cm, training duration 8.76+4.71 years) including sixteen Polish National Team małe field hockey players and twelve Polish National Team małe field hockey players under 21 years of age took part in the study Aerobic fitness estimation was ventila-tory threshold (VT) and peak oxygen uptake (V02peak) assessment using a portable spirometric-tele-metric device (Oxycon Mobile) during the progressive running test on a mechanical treadmill. Oxygen consumption (V02peak ml/min/kg) and heart ratę (HR beats/min) were constantly measured througho-ut the test. Before and 3 min after the test, capillary blood samples were taken to determine the level of lactic acid (LA) and acid-base balance parameters. For the evaluation of hypoxia grade in venous blood collected before and 10 min after the test, the levels ofxanthine (X), hipoxanthine (HX) and uric acid (UA) were analyzed by HPLC - UV method. Results. In the investigated group, a high level of physical fitness (V02peak=56.14±3.76 ml/min/kg, VT=13,76+1,05 km/h) was obsen/ed. Significant differences occurred between the rest and exercise le-vel ofLA, acid-base balance parameters, oxypurines and UA. A high negative correlation was found between V02peak and exercise level of UA as well as between VT and exercise level ofXand HX. Conclusions. Both V02peak and VT affect hypoxia grade reduction. Conversely VT level seems to have a morę pronounced effect on hypoxia grade and energetic stress reduction.
