PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SILK COCOONS OF BOMBYX MORI L.

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 5

Abstract

Silk cocoons, produced by Bombyx mori L. (Bombicidae) are useful as hypotensive, expectorant, bronchodilator and attenuant drug in traditional medicine. Phytochemical investigation of the ethanolic extract of the cocoons led to the isolation of new phenolic constituents identified as n-butyl-3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (1), 3′,8′,9′-trigeranilanyl-3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (2), 3′,7′-dimethyl-3′-hydroxy-octanyl gallate (3), 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-n-pentanyl ether (4) and 2,3,4-trihydoxypenyl-n-pentanyl ether (5) on the basis of spectral data analysis.
