Phytochemical Screening and Antibacterial/Antifungal Activities of Ginkgo biloba Extract EGb 761

Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences (IOSR-JPBS) - Year 2016, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Ginkgo biloba possesses a variety of biological and pharmacological activities. The present study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical components and antimicrobial activities of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761). Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, steroids, terpenes, flavonoids and saponins in the extract. The extract was examined for antimicrobial activity using Agar Diffusion method. It was effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Geotrichum candidum. The zone of growth inhibition ranged from 22- 27 mm with variable MIC, and MBC/MFC values. These results support the use of the Ginkgo biloba extract as herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases.
