Abstract
The article presents the origins and work of the Preparatory School for the Polytechnic Institute, the traditions of which Warsaw University of Technology draws upon. First, it describes industry development on the Polish lands in the second half of the 18th century and the ensuing problem of finding well-educated staff. The divisions of Poland hampered the development of technical education, and the first initiatives at the beginning of the 19th century failed. Only thanks to the efforts of Stanisław Staszic was the Preparatory School for the Polytechnic Institute opened in Warsaw in 1826. First, it was supposed to teach at the secondary school level, later to change into a technical university. However, already in its first year, university-level courses were opened along with lower courses. Three technical divisions were created: of mechanics, civil engineering and chemistry. After four years of its functioning, the School employed 16 professors and offered over 20 courses that covered most fields of contemporary technical knowledge. Description of the development of the School is the essence of the article and the conducted comparative analysis with the Vienna Polytechnic Institute allows the author to state that the Preparatory School for the Polytechnic Institute reached the level of a technical university in a very short time. Unfortunately, Tsar’s restrictions after the fall of the November Uprising also applied to higher education in the Kingdom of Poland and in 1831, the School was closed down. Only in 1898 was the Polytechnic Institute founded in Warsaw, later in 1915 transformed into Warsaw University of Technology, which continues the traditions of the Preparatory School and the mission of education of engineers.
