PIEZOELECTRIC DRIVE USAGE IN SHIP PROPULSION

Abstract

Hydraulic and electromagnetic drive are used as actuating mechanisms for fuel oil and gas injection on ships equipped with electronically controlled diesel engines. It leads to weight and size increasing, high power consumption for servo oil pump driving, reducing life time and reliability of control valves. Improvement of the electromagnetic and hydraulic drives in the design and technological direction is almost exhausted. There-fore, research and development of control systems with actuating mechanisms based on new physical principles are relevant. Piezoe-lectric drive (stack actuators, linear and rotary motors) can be used as alternative to hydraulic and electromagnetic. It has very high speed, force and reliability. It lacks the drawbacks of hydraulic and electromagnetic drives, but requires to use amplifiers to create high displacements and dynamic properties correcting devices due to high internal damping of piezo drive. Stack actuator must be used for fuel injection due to high force available and linear motors can be used for gas injection. Developed fuzzy logic positioning system models allow to correct the dynamic properties of the piezo drive and apply it to con-trol the actuating mechanisms of marine diesel engines, reduce the energy consumption and expand the range of possible fuel injec-tion curve.
