PIEZOGENIC PEDAŁ PAPULES-A CHRONIĆ DISEASE OF ATHLETES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The skin of athletes' feet is constantly exposed to adverse external factors. Piezogenic pedał papules are frequently encountered in athlete population. These are asympto-matic or painful papules, observed in 10-20 percent of athletes. They result in herniations of fat through the dermis. The papules are yellow or white. They are usually due to long standing and disappear when the weight is removed from the foot. They also disappear when lying. Usually, the patients can feel pain while standing or walking. The changes can appear regardless the pa-tienfs age. However, piezogenic papules need no treatment; when the changes are painful, ac-tivity should be restricted. The aim of work was to present piezogenic papules in athletes. Materiał and methods. The sample comprised 142 subjects (men and women) aged about 26.5 years, practising basketball, volleyball, football, athletics and martial arts (n=160), the patients of rehabilitation centres (n=129) and 289 controls (not participating in any sport). Results. Piezogenic pedał papules were observed in 26,06%, of the athletes (37) inclu-ding 56,76%, of males and 43,24%, of females, and in 15,57%, of the contro! group (45) inclu-ding 63,33%, of males and 26,67%, of females. In the group of athletes, 100%, of the changes appeared on the heels and 83,78%, of the changes occurred on both feet. The papules were most often observed in athletes (72,73%), especially in wlleyball (15,63%), basketball (37,50%), and football players (12,50%,). Conclusions. The occurrence of piezogenic papules is connected with intensified physical actMty Training may evoke such changes in individuals genetically predisposed to piezogenic pedał papules.
