PLANE AND TRAIN AS MEANS OF CROSSING BORDERS IN THE NOVELS ABOUT UKRAINIAN EMIGRANTS

Abstract

The article deals with the images of transport in the novels written by American writers, the representatives of the second generation Ukrainian emigrants. It analyzes the images of a plane and a train that helps DP refugees or their children to cross the borders between the USA, Europe and Ukraine. The aim is to understand how those images are used by the writers to restore the specific atmosphere of an epoch and cultural aspects of a specific period. The research relies on the methodology of anthropological approach to a literary text, ideas of imagology and cultural studies. The texts written in other cultures about Ukraine are still waiting for a profound research and this article proposes just one of the possible ways to present them to Ukrainian scholars and readers. The results of the research are important to be justified by similar inquiries into texts written in other countries about other immigrant groups. The outcomes of the interpretation are the following: an image of a plane is a characteristic feature of modern times, and it is often used to connect children of Ukrainian emigrants with their far away native land. Descriptions of planes and airports include lots of stereotypes. Trains are more typical for the European continent. Though, they are also used as a marker of American vast lands and as a marker of Ukrainian turbulent war period. Different vehicles help to cross both the real geographical borders and virtual borders between past, present and future, between memories, generations and cultures.
