Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2017, Vol 301, Issue 289
Abstract
The present paper deals with an existential issue about self-separation, even self-alienation and self-reticence in the locus which was chosen by people themselves. Current research is focused on this problem in the novel Pomyrana by T. Antypovych as quite recently considerable attention has been paid to this creative work. Although specific interest towards the novel has risen in the number of reviews and analytic studies, the questions of 1) self-isolation of the community from the civilized world and 2) dividing of the communities which identified themselves as the united nation – were not taken into account. That is why the main goal of this paper is to reveal the verge between common sense and hatred for the Different in the novel Pomyrana by T. Antypovych. This verge is on the level of inhabitants’ fear. They live isolated and threatened with mortal danger. Just that fear, mixed with hatred, makes Koryto inhabitants perform foolish and illogical deeds which cause harm to locals’ health and life. Characters’ identification as the community occurs on the level of hatred towards everything Different. The paper provides three stages of Koryto inhabitants’ hatred. Firstly, inhabitants, without being isolated yet, begin hating everybody who try to deprive them of usual living conditions. The second stage starts when the hatred towards the Different grows as the consequence of constant tension. Foolishness of former civilized community reaches the critical state. In this stage myths about skinning people alive beyond the Koliuchka are generated within the community. And during the third stage, a new type of hatred is formed. Koryto inhabitants start hating each other. This leads to physical destruction of community.
