PLATERO AND I BY JUAN RAMÓN JIMÉNEZ: RIDING THE DONKEY BETWEEN EARTH AND HEAVEN

Abstract
The paper interprets the book of verse in prose Platero and I (Platero y yo) as a key text for understanding the artistic world of Juan Ramón Jiménez. The author of the study suggests analyzing the representation of the concept of «border» in the work and comes to the conclusion that Juan Ramón Jiménez remains indifferent to the geographical, natural and physical factors which limit human existence by certain frames. At the same time, the paper proves that Juan Ramón Jiménez focuses on «the metaphysical borders», such as time and death. The author of the paper concentrates on the dialectics of transitions between eternity and earthly life, imagination and reality, beauty and ugliness, the present and the past, on the one hand, and the past and the future, on the other, which are displayed in poetics of his work. Platero and I reflects that Juan Ramón Jiménez was looking for ways of transcending the metaphysical borders in order to perceive the universe as a process, in which all phenomena are interrelated. By applying the concept of «metaphysical borders» to interpreting the text of the great Andalusian poet, this paper manages to present Platero and I as one of the most influential books in the Spanish spiritual history of the 20th century.
