Plot Forming Function of Ekphrasis in Ali Smith's Novels.

Abstract

The article focuses on the peculiarities of ekphrasis functioning in a postmodern text characterized by intermediality which is based on the interaction of multiple arts codes. It gives a short overview of researches being done in the area and elaborates on the notion of ekphrasis as being based on the principle of intersemiotic translation that involves a combination of intertextuality and intemediality features. The article also presents an analysis of numerous ekphrastic pieces available in two novels by a contemporary Scottish author Ali Smith, namely Autumn and How to be both, which allowed us to identify the author's specifics and innovative use of the phenomena. In particular, it is a wide range of ekphrasis objects including both visual, such as pictures, collages, photos, films, and non‐visual, such as songs and social networking sites. The article also argues that ekphrasis in Ali Smiths' novels is not as much a verbal representation of a visual art object as a description of its "reading", comprehending and epiphany on the part of characters. Ekphrasis in Ali Smiths' novels is mainly represented as following the eyes of a viewer – from separate details to understanding the whole – as opposed to actual seeing a wok of art when the general impression comes first, followed by focus on details. In both novels the specific "reading" of art pieces by characters turns to be the basis of the plot and explains its moves, so the research concludes that in these works ekphrasis has a narrative, plot forming function.
