Abstract

This survey aims to investigate and explore different politeness strategies which are used by Iranian teenagers while complaining their peers in different occasions. They might use different strategies to avoid being impolite while complaining their peers such as a) increased indirectness, b) questioning, c) joke/teasing, d) suggestion,(adopted and modified from Boxer, 1996 & Kumagai, 2004). To date, no serious study has addressed politeness about complaining of teenagers’ talk in Farsi in which both Iranian and Muslim customs are observed. As such, the present study was an attempt at describing the salient politeness strategies that are used by Iranian teenagers in the speech act of complaining in Farsi. One of the participants, Razieh, who was a student in a third year of junior high school in Shiraz- Iran, used self reporting technique and jot down whatever happened in her conversation with her peers in different occasions. She immersed herself in research setting, and systematically observing dimensions of that of setting, interactions, relationships, roles, events and so on within it. To identify the frequency of strategies which had been used by the Iranian teenagers to politely complain their peers, a frequency analysis was performed. The results of this analysis indicated Iranian teenagers employed joking strategy more than other strategies in order to alleviate and mitigate its negative effect on their interlocutors while complaining their peers.
