POLITICAL CULTURE OF AFRICA: DYNAMICS AND TRENDS
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Політологія" - Year 2016, Vol 273, Issue 261
Abstract
Political culture of modern African countries was forming for a long period of time. Two historical periods influ-enced on their formation. They were European colonization in Africa (late 19th – and early 20th century) and decoloni-zation (50–60-ies of the XX century). Political culture isn’t stable, so it is constantly evolving and changing. This neces-sitates a continuous research of cultural features in Africa. The article is devoted to the study of political culture in Africa and determination of its dynamics and the main de-velopment trends. The main focus is on the general features of the political culture of the North and West African coun-tries, sub-Saharan countries and South Africa. That’s why traditional and modern features of political culture of these regions were studied separately. European political culture was alien for most African societies. So there was a division of African culture into two main types. One of them was the culture of the ruling elite (liberal-democratic). The other one was the culture of the general popu-lation (traditional beliefs, ideals, values). Despite of the long period of colonization, the European culture couldn’t extrude the traditional African culture. The trends of modern culture depend on the evolution of the main areas of the traditional African societies (the weakening of community communications, the increasing of social mobility and social stratification of traditional socie-ties, the tribal integration, the degradation of traditional cultural values and public morality).
