POLSKA I POLACY A „DUCH” NOWOŻYTNOŚCI W DZIENNIKU WITOLDA GOMBROWICZA

Abstract

The Diary by Witold Gombrowicz apart from his known dramas belongs to the greatest literary achievements of this author. In this extensive work, as he writes, he “comments on” his literary output and at the same time “comments on” himself. This literary output as well as The Diary is ultimately the sphere, as he defines it, of “dream”. Here the special position belongs to Poland. In Gombrowicz’s thought the central category is the category of “form”. It is the world which is formed by the relationships between individuals. The life of each individual is the life “for”; the life in the other individual’s “eyes”. Modern Europe is the “world” in which, as Gombrowicz says, “moron” imposes “form” on another ”moron”. According to him the idea of the “spirit” of the West comes down to the following rule: “the wiser the foolisher”. In Gombrowicz’s opinion, what is the most precious in relationships between individuals is, as he claims, “immaturity”, “youth”, “inferiority”. Modern Europe is devoid of this. Here one can come across only: production, technology, science. Poland as compared to the West is the world of “backwater”; of “dullards”. It is the worship of A. Mickiewicz and H. Sienkiewicz. It is “childish”, “motionless”, provincial, “rustic” world. According to Gombrowicz such an image of Poland is just “one side of the coin”. On the other side the “immaturity” of Poland poses a chance. It is a chance both for Poland and for Europe. As a matter of fact “life laughs at the mind”. The West is the world of “rubbish”, “artificial” world of “form”. Poland is not obliged to catch up with the West. The only thing to do is to change provincial “childhood” into “adult’s childhood”.
