POST-EXERTION CHANGES IN BLOOD CORTISOL AND LACTATE LEVELS AND ORIENTATION-PERPCEPTUAL ABILITIES IN THE RUNNERS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to examine post-exercise changes of the level if the visual perception and orientation, and of blood cortisol and lactate levels in the male and female orienteering runners.Material and methods. Five females (19.0±1,5 y.) and four males (20.0±0.4 y.) practicing orienteering were subjected to the study. The athletes performed standardized interval running test consisting of four bouts (4 x 1600 m for females and 4x 2000m fir males), each of them separated by 2 minutes intermission. After worm-up and within 3, 30 and 60 minutes of post-run recovery blood was taken for determination cortisol and lactate levels. Simultaneously with sampling, orientation and perception were examined with using computer tests. The results of psychometric measures are expressed as percentage of incorrect responses. Results. Since lack of gender differences as regards to blood and psychometric parameters the results of the both group ware summarized. Blood cortisol levels before and within recovery period (+3, +30, +60 min.) were as follows: 440±113, 461± 111, 571±103*, 516±125* nmol/L. The values within +30 and +60 minutes were significantly various from the others. Blood lactate levels amounted 1,7±0.3, 11.6±3.0 and 3.0±2.2 mmol/L before run and within +3 and +30 minutes post-run period. The percentages of the errors within +3 and +30 minutes (70.5±5.9%* and 70.3±3.6%*) were higher compared with those recorded before (65.8±8.1%) and 60 min after (66.4± 4.8%) run.Conclusion. The exertion brought about impairment of oriented-perceptual abilities throughout 30 minutes post run period, but they normalized after 1-hour rest.
