Precarious work in Chile. Practices of Resistance in outsourced workers unions of the large-scale Chilean mining

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 10

Abstract

In this article we introduce a synthesis of field research on labor protest by workers about the "new" form of wage relation: subcontracting or outsourcing. We approach the analysis from an anthropological perspective, focusing on CODELCO miners, in El Teniente Division, one of the most important sectors of production in the Chilean economy. After 10 years of researching this problematic, we consider that becomes relevant to investigate and explain why some groups of subcontractor’s workers decide to unionize and which the analysis is, both leaders and workers do, about their participation in trade union activities.
