Predictors of Cigarette Smoking Among Adolescents
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2023, Vol 14, Issue 10
Abstract
The main objective of this study was to identify predictors of cigarette smoking among adolescents from selected secondary schools in Quirino. The respondents were identified based on the Tobacco Screening Measure, while data were gathered through a Socio-Demographic Survey Questionnaire and a Nicotine (Tobacco) Screening Survey. Descriptive correlational design was employed in the study, and inferential statistics were utilized in the data analysis. Based on the statistical findings of the study, the logistic regression model was statistically significant, χ2 (44) = 156.384; p < .000. The Wald test was used to determine the statistical significance for each of the forty-four (44) independent variables included in the study. From these results, it is revealed that twenty-six (26) independent variables added significantly to the model or prediction as evidenced by their p values <. 05. In this study, it is concluded that cigarette smoking among adolescents is undeniably rampant, and this is brought about by several intertwining factors such as their respective attitudes toward smoking, their families' stand about smoking in their homes, people they are with who can strongly influence them and the community to where they have access or exposure to anything that persuades them to smoke a cigarette.
