Prefaces to the English Novels of the XVIII century as a source of genre concepts

Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of the concepts of the genre of the novel, which were ex- pressed by prominent writers on the pages on the prefaces to the novels of the XVIIIth centuries. It is proved that their reflections formed one of the periods in the development of the novel’s reception.
