Preoperative ambulatory assessment of cardiac risk in patients qualified for vascular surgery procedures
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 1
Abstract
Vascular surgery procedures are associated with the highest risk of perioperative complications, such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, or sudden cardiac death. Proper preoperative assessment of patients scheduled for vascular surgery procedures results in decreased perioperative cardiac complications. General practitioners play an important, substantial role in preoperative identification of clinical risk factors, cardiac risk stratification, and optimization of medical therapy. The aim of the article was to give an overview of current strategies in preoperative cardiac risk assessment. In this study, the Goldman index, cardiac risk index by Detsky, and modified cardiac risk index by Lee are presented, which are very helpful in preoperative cardiac risk stratification. The list of active cardiac conditions is also presented, for which the patients should undergo evaluation and treatment before surgical procedures.Key wordsvascular surgery, perioperative cardiac risk, cardiac risk index
