PRESERVATION OF SEMANTIC PECULIARITY OF R. M. RILKE`S POETRY IN THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS

Abstract

The poetic text is a special problem for an interpreter at both linguistic and ideological-emotional levels. The creation of an ideal translation of poetry is not only a topic for philological discussions, but also the goal that translators aspire to. The translation of poetry differs significantly from the translation of prose, because the very nature of the poetry is different of the nature of prose work that is it has much greater weight of a single word, the widespread use of phonetic means of text organization and rhythmic-intonation peculiarity. When translating poetry, one should take into account that it is necessary to preserve the original size and rhyme in order to reach the content aspect of the poetic form in the translation as well as in the original text. The article contains an analysis of the translations of R. M. Rilke`s German poetry into the Ukrainian language at the semantic level. It also covers the translation techniques used by well-known Ukrainian translators V. S. Stus and M. P. Bazhan. The main differences between the original text and its translations are the usage of interchange of one part of speech with another, which is explained by differences in the norms of the German and Ukrainian languages; the usage of semantically colored vocabulary, exaggeration and sometimes even the antonymic translation. Translators successfully preserve the original length of the verses, rhyming and equilinearity. The differences between the translations and the original text can be explained by the differences between the language norms of the German and Ukrainian languages, as well as differences in the styles of translators and their own understanding of the original text. The analyzed translations of M. P. Bazhan and V. S. Stus can be considered adequate and successful. They can be attributed to the achievements of the Ukrainian translation studies, which demonstrate the expressive capabilities of the Ukrainian language and provide an opportunity for Ukrainians to get acquainted with the R. M. Rilke`s poetry.
