Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death globally, contributing to more than 5 million estimated deaths every year and if current smoking patterns continue; it will cause some 10 million deaths each year by 2020. Smoking among health care personnel such as medical students is an important public health issue. More effective measures to reduce tobacco smoking among medical students are needed worldwide. Very few studies had been conducted in past in India and other developing countries to understand the magnitude of the problem. Objective: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of smoking among medical students. Methodology: A Cross sectional study was conducted during October to December 2011 among 212 undergraduate and intern male medical students of a teaching institute attached to a tertiary care hospital, in Maharashtra state of India. Subjects were administered a self-administered pre tested questionnaire and smoking status was assessed as per the criteria laid down by WHO. Proportion and chi square test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The prevalence of current smoking was found to be 32.55%. It was high among 4th year (47.27%) medical students as compared to other year students. Significantly more hostellers (36.26%) were using tobacco as compared to day scholars (17.07%).The familial aggregation of the current smoking was quite evident in the present study. ‗Peer pressure‘ (55.07%) was the most common factor responsible for initiation of tobacco consumption. Conclusion: Prevalence of smoking among medical students is high that warrants adoption of comprehensive smoking control interventions among them.
