Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
Smoking cigarette is by far the most important risk factor for oral cancer and pre cancer & its use is a medical addictive condition. Several meta-analyses of the impact of smoke free legislation have been published over the past 10 years concluding that such bans reduce exposure to tobacco toxins, reduce respiratory symptoms in workers. These bans are primarily a public health measure. In spite of all this many health professionals continue to smoke. The objective of the present study is to know the prevalence of smoking among health professionals. A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out to assess smoking habits, knowledge about its effect on health & attitude towards cessation programs. Fairly high smoking prevalence was found among healthcare professional students of which highest smoking prevalence was observed among dental students. Smoking among future doctors is a major problem as practitioners play an important role in assisting patients to stop smoking with their unique positions in the community. This indicates where there is ban, there is still fire.
