Prevalence of Hypothyroidism in Pregnancy. Does universal screening helps?

Abstract

AIMS: To establish the prevalence, impact and usefulness of universal screening of hypothyroidism on pregnancy outcomes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Prospective study of 500 pregnant women attending OPD and IPD of our tertiary care centre,ahmedabad. in first trimester were screened.Thyroid hormone levels were estimated.Patients with thyroid dysfunction were observed periodically and treatments were given according to severity.Subjects were followed until delievery. RESULTS: Prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is 7 % and overthypothyroidism is 4.2%.Age group of 20-24 were mostly affected with slightly higher incidence in multigravida.Both were associated with preeclampsia, preterm delievery ,abortion,low birth weight,abruptio placenta,fetal growth retardation. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hypothyroidism is high and they were associated with preeclampsia, preterm delievery ,abortion,low birth weight,abruptio placenta,fetal growth.regular screening can detect and prevent the complication associated with thyroid disorder.
