Abstract
The article is devoted to the role of conceptual analysis in translation. The stages of conceptual analysis are suggested depending on the literary text genre. The first two stages include the determination of the main textual concept and the key conceptual metaphors (CM) as well as lexical and stylistic means of CM verbalization. The next two stages consist in the text translation and editing and the comparative analysis of CM in the original and the target text. The main devices of text analysis are determined both from linguistic and translation viewpoints as the criteria of translation quality and exactness. The examples of conceptual analysis and translation of poetical texts by N. West, R. Burns, W. H. Auden as well as a fragment of the literary fairy tale by O. Wilde are presented. In the texts of West and Wilde the concept NATURE is verbalized by means of extended anthropomorphic metaphors. The key CM in West’s poem is NATURE IS A SHY WOMAN. In translation literal translation is used with addition of literary poetical words. One of the major CM in the well-known poem by R. Burns “My Love” is LOVE IS A ROSE. Our outstanding translator M. Lukash applied such devices in the target text as trope substitution (simile → metaphor) and compression in order to retain rhyme and meter. But Lukash successfully rendered the conceptual idea. In the first part of the poem by W. H. Auden the concept DEATH OF A POET is verbalized. The concept is realized with the help of lexical units of two semantic fields “DEATH” and “WINTER” which are emphasized by alliteration. In the target text our famous translator M. Striha rendered the CM DEATH OF A POET IS WINTER by means of literal translation and the use of lexical units with a negative prefix. On the example of the translation of CM in the literary tale by O. Wilde the mistakes of the amateur translator in rendering the CM NATURE IS WOMAN are shown. The conclusion is made that the major devices of conceptual translation in the given texts include literal translation, synonymic substitution, trope substitution and compression (in poetry translation). It is precise rendering of conceptual metaphors in translation that is the condition of exactness and quality of literary translation.
