Abstract

Introduction: The development of civilization and technological progress brings about new challenges for science in the field of health, illness, and medicine. Lifestyle diseases affecting the population forced the development of behaviors leading to the reduction of their incidence. These behaviors are called ‘prevention’. Prevention programmes are a tool for improving the health status and level of knowledge of the community, and prevention of these diseases. Objective: To present principles for establishing population-based prevention programmes.Brief description of the state of knowledge: Prevention programmes are the basis for improving the health of the popu- lation. Their importance plays a significant role in shaping public health. A very important issue is the proper preparation of the merits of the programme and fair selection of the target group. The article presents the principles used to create prevention programmes for improving public health.Summary: Creating a programme is an arduous task which, however, can bring many social benefits related to health and its improvement. This improvement should also include the quality of life of the persons participating in the programme. Selection of the target group, as well as the health issue, should be preceded by a history of environmental research. A very important issue is the development and implementation of health programme evaluation, which should be subject to con- tinuous evaluation in order to avoid basic mistakes.Key wordsprevention, preventive program, health program
