Principles of geriatric pharmacotherapy

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 8

Abstract

Geriatrics is a part of medicine inherently linked to polysymptomathology and polypharmacology, and a rational attempt at pharmacology of the elderly is among the most important aspects of medical care. Awareness of the facts described in this article (in particular modified pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug interactions, and drug-disease interactions) should facilitate the formulation of clear standards in pharmacotherapy of elderly, which, in turn, would help us to avoid many therapeutic failures and improve the overall life standard of the elderly population.
