PROBLEMS OF THE TRANSLATION OF FEMALE NAMES IN THE ENGLISH TEXT FROM THE STANDPOINT OF COGNITIVE LINGUISTICS

Abstract

The translator today is an intermediary between communicants belonging to different linguocultural spaces with linguistic and conceptual pictures of the world that do not coincide. The cognitive systems of communicators are one of the most important factors influencing the process of communication, and the background knowledge of all participants in translational communication. The principle of anthropocentrism allows one to study language as one of the cognitive abilities, as a means of fixation and a way of transmitting conceptual and cultural information. In connection with the establishment of a new cognitive paradigm in modern translation studies, there is a rethinking of the traditional for this field of applied linguistics concepts such as the author / translator, the primacy / secondary nature of the texts of the original and the translation, equivalence and accuracy of translation. The development of linguistic-cognitive translation theory requires taking into account the peculiarities of language conceptualization and categorization not only in terms of universal processes of conceptual content verbalization, but also from the point of view of the specifics of the implementation of language conceptualization and categorization for each individual language. Consideration of such features is important for solving translation difficulties related to the translation of names in general and the names of people in particular. Translation of names occurs in various ways. However, the person’s name has additional connotations that the translator must retain when translating, but often it is different. The specific implementation of the source domain of the nominative means of another language does not match. The difference in the choice of the basis for the transfer of features inherent in one referential area (source area) to another referential area (area-goal) is due to the linguocognitive features of conceptualization and cultural-specific connotations. Accordingly, the cognitive basis of translational transformations in the transfer of English names is the re-modeling of names to take into account the specifics of the conceptual picture of the world and cultural connotations associated with a particular source area in the linguistic and cultural common language of translation.
