Pseudohyperphosphatemia: A Prelude to Multiple Myeloma
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 2
Abstract
Multiple myeloma is a haematological malignancy characterized by monoclonal plasma cell proliferation leading to excessive production of paraproteins that can result in spurious elevation of the serum phosphorus level due to interference with colorimetric estimation. We report the case of a 66 year old female presenting with subacute intestinal obstruction who had anemia, elevated ESR and pseudohyperphosphatemia in the absence of other routine lab abnormalities associated with multiple myeloma. After appropriate work up, she was diagnosed to be suffering from stage III multiple myeloma.
