Psychosocial risk management in health protection of workers

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4

Abstract

According to the European directives in the field of occupational safety and health, and in the face of the need to prepare a national strategy and programme for the protection of the health of workers in the coming years, an implementation in Poland of common programmes tackling stress in the workplace will be necessary. Currently, there is no legislation directly governing the principles of the protection of workers against psychosocial risks and procedures in this regard. The publication presents a proposal for a model of psychosocial risk management in the health protection of workers. The proposed model is based on the principles of the European model of psychosocial risk management (PRIMA-EF) and the system of prophylactic care of employees functioning in Poland. In this model, the emphasis is placed on primary prevention, focused on organization. Risk management is a continuous process which takes place at five stages: 1. Risk assessment and audit of to-date used practices 2. Preparation of the plan of actions, 3. Implementation, 4. Policy evaluation, 5. Societal learning. Implementation of anti-stress actions requires the involvement at all stages of the management of many stakeholders: employers, workers, occupational health services and others.Poland currently already has a potential when it comes to the ability to develop and implement a new system for the protection of the health of workers, taking into account the protection from dangers of psychosocial risk. However, activities in the field of improving the competence of future implementers’ tasks related to combating stress are necessary.Key wordsoccupational stress, health promotion, psychosocial risk management
