Purpose of life in the chronically ill patients

Abstract

Introduction. Sense of life is a concept widely understood both in philosophical and psychological terms. It is shaped by the values ​​that are considered to be important and valuable to the individual, combined with positive experiences and are the target of human aspirations. Chronic diseases have an impact on both the human somatic and mental sphere, change views on what in life is more or less valuable. Aim. The aim of the work was to define the hierarchy of values influencing the perception of sense of life by chronically ill persons. Material and methods. The group 100 hospitalized patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, pulmonary or cardiovascular diseases was investigated. The diagnostic poll method and the purpose of life test (PLT) were used for the research analysis. Results and conclusions. The analysis of the research showed that people suffering from different chronic diseases maintain high level of sense of life and health, family, and love are considered the most precious values. Whereas friends, colleges or pursuing their personal interests are considered to play less important role in their lives.
