Rasha Dorgham’s Implementation of Sociolinguistic Competence Strategies in Teaching and Learning English as a Foreign Language: A Review
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2025, Vol 32, Issue 2
Abstract
Teaching English to meet global demands requires an emphasis on sociolinguistic competence, enabling students to use English not only grammatically but also appropriately in diverse social and cultural contexts. This article review examines the methodology, findings, and implications of Rasha Dorgham's study, with a focus on assessing its effectiveness and relevance in addressing the integration of sociolinguistic competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. Dorgham proposes strategies such as role-playing, cultural exchanges, and group discussions to enhance students' practical communication skills and foster intercultural communication. While these methods demonstrate significant potential, challenges such as inadequate resources, limited instructional time, and the need for teacher training persist. The findings underscore the importance of teaching sociolinguistic skills to build students’ confidence and effectiveness in navigating diverse cultural interactions.
