Reduction in intensity of pain and complications caused by preventive vaccinations in small children
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
Vaccination is a planned action which safeguards children against serious diseases; unfortunately, despite the fact that they are an enormous boon, alas they are painful. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide methods available for mitigating the pain caused by the protective vaccination, as well as reducing the prevalence of undesirable complications of vaccination. In the first two years of life, a child receives more than ten injections connected with vaccination. During the first six months of life, vaccinations are made every four or six weeks. Pain ailments connected with injections can be lessened by providing a child with stimuli causing pleasure, e.g. stroking. It is also claimed that the application of a small amount of concentrated glucose lessens the pain. Also, after consulting a nurse or doctor, safe painkillers may be applied. Parents must remember that children are really sensitive to the emotional reactions of their parents, whose anxiety may intensify the unpleasant experiences of children. It is therefore very important to manage and calm parents, which largely depends on awareness and knowledge of how you can help the child. Post-vaccination reactions may be localized or general. As the reaction to an injected antigen, a bruise, redness or inflammation occurs, which may cause pain. However, it is not infectious and application of a compress is recommended.Key words: vaccination, pain, undesirable post-vaccination reaction, child
