Regular Practice Of Bhramari Pranayama Raised Blood Hemoglobin Level In Young Healthy Volunteers

Abstract

Background: Yoga science of breathing is called Pranayama. Oxygen is the most vital nutrient of our body. Pranayama has been reported to be beneficial in treating a range of stress related disorders, improving autonomic functions, relieving symptoms of asthma, stuttering and reducing signs of oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of regular practice of Bhramari Pranayama for 3 months on blood hemoglobin level in young healthy volunteers Methods and Results: - The study group comprised of 54 healthy medical students aged 18 to 24 yrs. Bhramaripranayama resulted into significant increase in the blood hemoglobin level of the subjects from initial 12.03 ± 1.5 gm % to 12.54 ± 1.5 gm % (p<0.1). Significant reduction in the resting pulse rate and respiratory rate of the subjects was observed forminitial mean pulse rate 77.5 ± 5.14 per min to 72.8 ± 5.2 per min (p<0.1) and respiratory rate from 19.4 ± 2.17 per min to 16.5 ± 1.56 per min (p<0.1). Conclusion:- We concluded that regular practice of Bhramari Pranayamafor 3 months significantly raised the blood hemoglobin level and reduced both resting pulse rate and respiratory rate.
