RELATION BETWEEN BONE MINERAL DENSITY (BMD), ISOTOPIC INDICATORS OF BONE METABOLISM (BM) AND LOWER LIMBS MUSCLE PERFUSION (MP) IN YOUNG WOMEN AS A FUNCTION OF THEIR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2
Abstract
Background. Physical activity should influence BMD and muscle perfusion. The assessment of relations between bone tissue density, bone metabolism, and perfusion of surrounding tissues is very important. Radioisotopic methods allow diagnosis of bone metabolism disorders and muscle perfusion. The aim of the paper was the assessment of radioisotopic and densitometric parameters of bone metabolism and muscle perfusion in physically active vs sedentary women. Material and methods. Self-developed methods and programs for defining indicators of bone metabolism (BM) as well as indicators of femoral muscles perfusion (FMP) were applied. Densitometric examinations and USG Doppler were performed. The direction and strength of correlations between the examined parameters were evaluated. Results. Physical activity was related to higher bone mineral density in epiphysis-adjacent region of the femur (f.e.), but at the ½ of the femoral bone (½ f.b.) the influence on compact bone mineralization was small. In physically active women higher values of BM and lower values of TMP comparing to sedentary women were observed. Strong positive correlation between f.e. BMD and TMP was noted in this group.Correlations between ½ f.b. BMD and TMP indicators were negative and moderately strong in both groups and the correlation values were similar.Conclusions.1. Systematic physical activity improves muscle perfusion, bone mineral density and bone metabolism, which was confirmed by strong correlations between the analysed parameters. Sedentary lifestyle causes degradation of bone metabolism and femoral muscles perfusion. 2. Strong positive correlation between f.e. BMD and TMP was noted in physically active women, whereas correlations between ½ f.b. BMD and TMP indicators were independent of lifestyle and physical activity.
