Relationship between phenotypic characters of plants of ‘Grande naine ’and‘ Calcutta 4 ’grown in vitro and their response to inoculation with Mycosphaerella fijiensis in a greenhouse
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2010, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
Resistance of some varieties of Musa sp. to Black Sigatoka is related to the presence of physical barriers associated with leaf anatomy. However, knowledge about the relationship between morphological characters and the type of interaction established in this pathosystem in some Musa genotypes is limited. Then, this work is aimed to analyze the relationship between phenotypic characters of ‘Grande naine’ and ‘Calcutta 4’ plants cultured in vitro and their response to Mycosphaerlla fijiensis inoculation in greenhouse. Morphological description of ‘Calcutta 4’ (resistant) and ‘Grande naine’ (susceptible) plants was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Leaves thickness, stomata density and lignin content were determined on leaves of plants from both genotypes. Phenotypic differences between ‘Grande naine’ and ‘Clacutta 4’ plants were observed. These largely coincided with those described for adult plants under field conditions. Additionally, there were not significant differences in thickness and lignin content of leaves. Though, stomata density was significantly higher in leaves of plants from resistant cultivar compared to susceptible genotype. In the case of ‘Grande naine’ and ‘Calcutta 4’ Musa genotypes, these phenotypic characteristics are not totally determinant in the kind of susceptible or resistant response established in this pathosystem.
