Journal Title: Revista Cuarzo - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
Objective: To assess the relationship between high-risk behaviors and family dynamics with respect to structure and the perception of family functionality in an adolescent population. Methodology: An observational study with a cross-sectional design was carried out with a population of 12 302 adolescents ranging in ages from 1 O to 19 years of age attending 12 public schools from the locality of Suba. A self-questionnaire was administered focusing on sexual behavior, addictions, depression, violent behaviors and eating disorders. Results: There was 63 % prevalence of good family function and 7 % prevalence of severe family dysfunction; and comparing these with high-risk behaviors found a relation to violent behavior (OR of 4.1 with CI of 95 % 3.4-4. 7), eating disorders (OR 2.3 with CI of 95 % 1.9-2.8) and sexual relations (OR of 2.0 with CI of 95 % 1.7-2.4). Conclusions: Family dysfunction was found to provoke more linkage to high-risk behaviors than what was found to derive from family structure. The stronger relation is observing between violence and family
