RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND ITS PLACE IN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE LEGISLATIVE SEYM WORKS OF 1919-1922

Abstract

The author presented problems of teaching religion as well as its place in the state educational system as seen from the perspective of the works of the first Seym of the Second Republic of Poland. The Legislative Seym, debating in the years 1919 – 1922, not only strove to adopt the constitution and to carry out the agricultural reform, but also fairly often dealt with educational matters. Among the most urgent educational tasks of reborn state were: the introduction of compulsory schooling, polonizing education as well as unification of education. During debates on education, the matters of religion and its place in the educational system were raised very often. Members of Parliament representing right-wing party were in favour of the school model which was based on religious upbringing in which clergymen were to play an important role. Among such MPs were priest Kazimierz Kotula, priest Kazimierz Lutosławski, Józef Pietrzyk, Adam Piotrowski, and Ignacy Thomas. The argumentation behind this particular school model was the connection between Polish culture and the church as well as Christian model of upbringing characteristic of our nation. What was also important was the fact that Catholic religion constituted a factor differentiating Poles from the former partitioners, and thus, such a model of upbringing young people would strengthen their feeling of national identity. The role of church in maintaining national identity was also emphasized. Members of Parliament representing left-wing parties, for example Julian Smulikowski or Jan Woźnicki, sought to adopt a different school model for Poland. The universality of education was for them the main priority and according to them this priority was not reconcilable with religious character of schooling. The author also discusses issues of religious education during debates on March Constitution pointing to the significance of the above mentioned issues to the reborn Polish state.
