Religious Identity, Difference, and Human Rights

Abstract
Religion is a dominant factor in the identity of individuals as well as of peoples. The identity of individuals concerning their religion is a highly private matter. In forming a people’s identity religion is of public importance and fulfils public functions. The paper describes the function of religion in forming identities in several Western European countries. It takes France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland, as well as some other European states to analyse differences as well as common features in historical and contemporary experience. چکیده در خلال فرآیندی که دهه‌های متمادی طول کشید، روشی نوین از حیات سیاسی برای از میان بردن جنگ، که به منزلة یک ابزار سیاسی اروپا و جهان را ویران ساخته بود، شکل گرفت. از آنجا که فرانسه و آلمان، همانند سایر ملل اروپایی، قرن‌ها با یکدیگر دشمن بودند، جوامع اروپایی ساختاری سیاسی، فرهنگی و اقتصادی تشکیل دادند که امکان انتخاب گزینة جنگ را از میان میبرد. یکپارچه‌سازی اروپا به حل اختلافات بین شمال اروپا، که مردمان آن عمدتاً پروتستان بودند، و جنوب، که عمدتاً کاتولیک بودند، کمک شایانی کرد. این کار مسیحیت ارتدوکس و بسیاری از ادیان و فرق مختلف را متحد کرد. بیش از دوازده میلیون مسلمان در اتحادیة اروپا زندگی می‌کنند. امروزه در اروپا اندیشة توجه به تفاوت‌ها و ملاحظة گوناگونی‌ها به عنوان عامل غنابخشی به زندگی، و همچنین پذیرش حضور دیگران مورد توجه قرار می‌گیرد. الحاق اسلام به اتحادیة اروپا به همان میزان که یک آرزوست، چالشی پیش روی اروپا نیز هست. اگر اروپا در این کار موفق شود، ارزش اندیشة اروپایی، یعنی صلح بر اساس احترام، مصالح عمومی از طریق همکاری، و وحدت به رغم تفاوت به اثبات خواهد رسید. یکی از پایه‌های این فرآیند، قانون اروپا در خصوص دین است که آیینة توسعة هویت اروپا قلمداد می گردد
