REMAINS OF „E WIDE” (Ê) IN THE BESSARABIA BULGARIAN MANNER OF SPEAKING

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 21

Abstract

The article treats the presence of the specific sound wide ê (æ) in the place of the Old Bulgarian big yus and big yer in two Bessarabian Bulgarian dialects – those of the villages of Kalchevo and of Vinogradnoe, Bolgrad region. So far, the phenomenon has not been noticed by the researchers of the Bulgarian dialects in Ukraine, including the authors of Атлас болгарских говоров в СССР (Atlas of the Bulgarian Dialects in USSR) and S. Topalova, who wrote a monograph on the Kalchevo dialect. In the article we show many examples of the use of the sound ê (æ). For instance: Удърù гу със прềчкътъ, удърù гу със пръчкътъ ..., удърù гу със пръчкътъ пу гърбề ..., дъ му стùгни ъкềлạ ‘Hit him with the stick, hit him with the stick, hit him with the stick on the back, so that he could become a wise man’ (Kalchevo); На гềс сид’àх! Нъ г`ъс къту сидùш, тò пучùвъш. Ми нъ гềс, нъ жòпътъ съ дỳмъ … ‘I was sitting on my bottom. When you sit on your bottom, you take a rest. On your bottom, it is called this way …’ (Vinogradnoe). We also make a statement that the sound ê (æ) has been transferred to Kalchevo and Vinogradnoe by the inhabitants of the nearby village of Golitsa, where initially the sound was in normal use, although it is no longer preserved, since the original Golitsa dialect has disappeared.
